The certificate of competence is for people who need sound theoretical and practical knowledge for projects and project management and want to prove this through an independent examination via a certificate.

Procedure for personal certification
The certificate is acquired via an online multiple choice exam.
People who are already familiar with project management usually have the necessary knowledge base. For people who are new to project management, ISO21500 offers an efficient way to learn the basics of PM and obtain a certificate.
As preparation
- order and study the original ISO 21500 standard from ISO or
- read a book on project management in accordance with ISO21500 resp. ISO21502 or
- attend a seminar on project management
‘Good seminars’ will teach the content of ISO21500, as the standard contains the basic guidelines for project management. However, ask the seminar provider about ISO conformity before attending a PM seminar!
For experienced project managers, certification is also possible without explicit preparation. In any case, however, it is recommended that you read the standard, which is only around 50 pages long, or a corresponding ISO21500 book on the subject of project management.
A free exam test is available to familiarise yourself with the exam, the questions and the online system.
The exam can be taken independently or as part of a PM seminar and takes place on the online platform ISO21500.de in the following steps:
- Exam registration
- Examinations
- Exam completion and certificate issue
When registering for the exam, you will be asked for a few details that are required for the certificate to be issued, such as your first name and surname.
The examination fee must then be paid.
In the examination itself, questions from the various subject areas of project management must be answered using the multiple choice method. There are 75 questions to be answered in 90 minutes.
The result of the exam is announced immediately at the end. If 65% of the answers are correct, the exam is passed and the certificate can be downloaded directly online.

Project manager according to ISO21500

Plan-driven classic project approach
The plan-driven classic project approach, often also known as the waterfall model, is a structured and sequential project management model based on detailed planning and a clear sequence of phases. ISO 21500 provides guidelines for project management and its process groups are aligned with the classic approach.
Agile project approach
The agile project approach is a flexible and iterative method of project management that is particularly effective in dynamic and fast-moving environments. Representatives of these approaches include Scrum, Kanban and Design Thinking.
With its guidelines, ISO 21500 also provides the necessary processes and topics to be observed for these projects.
Hybrid PM approach
Hybrid project management combines the strengths of traditional and agile methods in order to meet the requirements of complex and multi-layered projects. It combines the structured and planning-oriented approaches of the waterfall model with the flexible and adaptable techniques of agile methods.
